Program Description

The program combines the materials covered in the Foundations of Yoga Therapy and Advanced Yoga Therapy programs, along with a case study project and additional student clinic sessions.

Program Highlights

  • Assess and address physical, mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual imbalances from an Eastern & Western perspective in one-on-one and small group therapeutic sessions.
  • Learn to work as a yoga therapist with trauma survivors, people with mental illness, diverse and aging populations.
  • Understand the philosophy and employ problem solving tools from Vedantic, Buddhist and Northern Indian Shaivite Tantric traditions of yoga.
  • Identify and list common conditions, medications and medical terminology associated with the muscular, skeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, digestive, endocrine, lymphatic and reproductive systems.
  • Provide home yoga protocols and practices to address your clients’ physical concerns using the Integrated Systems Model (Lee & Lee) to uncover the root cause of the concern.
  • Provide a practice to balance the chakra system using yogic techniques from the tantric yoga tradition.
  • Conduct a case study project with an individual or group representative of a chosen population.
  • Develop and deliver a series of yoga therapy sessions or classes based on your research and findings.
  • Offer 1 hour Yoga Therapy sessions during Student Clinic, to members of the public.

*Our online classes are taught synchronously through Zoom.

The Vancouver School of Healing Arts welcomes students of any sex, sexual orientation, marital status, race, colour, national or ethnic origin, or religion.

Admission Requirements

  • $100 application fee
  • A 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training certificate
  • One (1) year of yoga teaching experience
  • One (1) year of personal practice
  • High school diploma or equivalent or minimum 19 years of age prior to the start of the program
  • Completed application form and health evaluation
  • Personal interview with the Admissions Advisor
  • Free of disability or disease that could impede the learning process of the individual or jeopardize the health and safety of fellow students/clients

Faculty and Staff

The Vancouver School of Healing Arts boasts a celebrated faculty of instructors who bring diverse professional skills, abilities and knowledge to the yoga therapy programs.

Our faculty is comprised of a diverse group of healthcare and wellness experts, including yoga therapists, physiotherapists, registered massage therapists (RMTs) and manual therapists.

They actively practice the work they teach, creating a learning environment that is current and practice-oriented.

In sharing their knowledge, wisdom, enthusiasm and compassion, our instructors endeavour to create an experience that is enriching, both professionally and personally.

The curriculum for the C-IAYT Yoga Therapy program is a combination of the Foundations of Yoga Therapy curriculum and the Advanced Yoga Therapy curriculum, with additional student clinic sessions and a case study.

Students will learn to assess and address physical, mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual imbalances from an Eastern & Western perspective and address imbalances in one-on-one & small group therapeutic sessions using the following practices: (ni)yama, asana, pranayama, mudra, mantra and meditation.

  • VSOHA may approve transfer credits by formal submission to the Admissions Director

  • Each request will be forwarded to the Program Director for review.

  • VSOHA requires proof of completion (certification or transcript), to consider approving transfer credits.

  • The program/course syllabus is required & is reviewed by the Program Director to ensure the learning & course objectives meet IAYT competencies

  • Students must challenge and complete all quizzes, tests, practical evaluations and assessments to show competency.

  • A minimum mark of 65% is required in prior training.

  • A minimum mark of 65% is required in challenged assessments.

  • All assessments must be completed.

  • Once transfer credits have been approved:

    • The student may still choose to audit any specific module within the course, or the entire course.

    • If a student chooses not to audit any part of the course, a credit for tuition associated with the course is applied to program fees.

    • The Program Director will make any decisions regarding how a student will audit.

    • If certain competencies have not been met, students will receive partial transfer
      credit and be required to attend specific sections of the course.

    • Approved transfer hours may not exceed 300 hrs of the total in class hours. This 300 hours may be applied to any course of the program so long as the criteria for transferring credits has been met (as outlined above).

    • Prerequisite hours (200 hour teacher training, 1 year personal practice and 1 year teaching experience) may not be applied as transfer hours.
